Mamas: Get yourself a DSLR

This picture was taken using the ultimate starter kit of DSLR cameras, a Nikon D3200. Here’s the thing. I love my kids and when we take them to get their pictures taken, they either photograph really well or really bad. Is there anything more frustrating than paying money to memorialize that time your child had that awkward forced smile or cried instead of acting like that perfect gift from the Lord Above? Been there.

The real kicker is that the best pictures, the ones that make you gush, the ones you bring to your job, the ones you mail to your family members, yes even the best pictures fall flat after a time. Well, they do for me at least. The pictures that I really truly adore endlessly are the candid shots that my family doesn’t even know I’m taking.

This picture was taken on the rookie of DSLRs while peeking around a door frame. My children are a little over two years apart and this was one of the first moments that I saw my daughter approach and interact with my son without prompting. If you’re a mom of more than one child, you know what a Moment with a capital “M” this is.

I was on maternity leave and had just gotten out of the shower and no one was crying, so of course that warrants investigation. Imagine peeking in the door and seeing this instead of the kid-tastrophe you’re expecting. Her nail polish is chipped and needs to be removed. I’m confident he has spit up on his outfit. It’s real; it’s perfect. Moments like these (with a capital “M”) are almost impossible to catch when you’re going to these family photo shoots. These are the pictures your photographer didn’t know you wanted.  They’re the pictures you didn’t know you wanted. Trust me moms. You want these candids.

What I love is seeing both of their hands with those little baby fat rolls at their wrists. She’s still learning the mechanics of how to hold a hand. He’s still learning how to reach and grasp with intention. And here they stinkin’ are. When I look back through our family photos, we have plenty that make me go “Aww” or “Look at how great they look there.” This one makes me get that wrench in my gut. You know the one. It also makes your eyes get all squinty and before you know it your saying something along the lines of “…*sniffle…..oh my babies….growing up….look how little….*sob….”
